Notes and Suggestions:

1) More watts on the replacement power supply is OK. The new power supply only provides power upon demand. Will NOT harm computer!

2) Power supply should not be tested unless connected to the motherboard. Those little pocket power supply testers will often fail these newer power supplies. Connect the power supply to the computer as below.

3) Only connect the 20/24 pin ATX connector and the square 4 pin to do an initial test of the new power supply. (don’t put power to the hard drives, floppy drive(s) or CDROM/DVD drives) You are just looking for video at this point.

4) Is it possible our power supply is defective out of the box? Possible, but not likely. We test them on a test fixture just before it ships. It boots a computer into WinXP or it doesn't go in the box. Depending on your computer, it may be possible to test it with a standard size ATX power supply. It probably wont fit in the case correctly but you might be able to connect it to test.

5) Still no video or indications of power? Remove all cards in the computer not associated with video. Remove the modem, network card, sound card, keyboard, mouse, usb etc. Remove all hard drive and floppy drive data cables at the motherboard end. If you have more than one memory module, remove them all except one. Remove the keyboard and mouse. Nothing in a USB port, nothing in a motherboard slots except maybe video.

20 pin ATX connector 20/24 pin ATX connector
All ATX motherboards have this one. It's keyed so it will only go on one way. Newer power supplies will usually have at least one “missing” white wire in this connector. It is the minus (-) 5 volt line and will cause those little power supply testers to fail the unit being tested. Some connectors are "20+4" and can be used as either.

4 pin IDE Hard Disk Drive connector
Also for CDROM and DVD players/writers. Only goes on one way. There are three or four of these that are the same, it doesn't matter which one goes where as long as it reaches the device. Wires are red/black/black/yellow

4 pin Floppy Disk Drive connector
Goes to a floppy drive if you have one. It is possible to “force” this one on backwards. Also powers some image card readers and internal speaker systems. Wires are also red/black/black/yellow

3 pin fan connector
Controlled the fan in your old power supply. Nothing else uses it. The replacement does NOT need the 3 pin connector it is simply omitted when installed. Labeled as FAN/C or sometimes P9 and sometimes P7 on HP.

Square 4 pin connector
For Pentium 4 and AMD64 systems only, if you do not have this connector on your motherboard simply do not use it. Wires are black/black/yellow/yellow

In-line 4 pin connector For HP video.
Almost never used. Went to the motherboard. If your old power supply was using it, you absolutely have to have it. Most of our replacement power supplies have this connector. Wires are blue/black/black/yellow
